What do you think of when we talk about health? And what do you think it takes to be healthy?
Most people would say “I need to eat right and exercise!” That's true to a certain extent, but in my last 15 years as a holistic medical practitioner, I've noticed that actually those are not the most important things. I have found that when people excessively focus on eating healthy and exercising, they miss out on the even more important things in life that we need as human beings to be really vibrant, energized and thrive in our lives.
So if you can, take out the pen and paper and consider this: What are some non-food ways that you can nourish yourself?
What happens is we try to eat healthy, but we use food to fill hungers within our lives that maybe we're not fulfilling in other ways. For example: What are some ways that we can nourish ourselves physically?
And what about our minds? What is nourishing for our minds? Maybe you’re watching junkie TV all the time and that's exhausting your mind and not feeding and nourishing. So what about inspirational books, beautiful music, engaging and inspiring conversations that you can have with your friends?
I know I've been guilty of this when I'm not nourishing my mind. Sometimes out of boredom we might eat junky food. In nutrition science they have this concept called "The Crowding Out Strategy." If we want to eat more healthy, we should crowd the junkie foods with more healthy fruits and vegetables and things that we would like to eat more of.
I invite you to expand that kind of framework into every aspect of your life. How can you crowd out the junky food with better food? And start adding more non-food nourishment for your physical body, your mind, and your emotions.
What’s nourishing to your emotional body? Maybe pets, cats, and dogs. Time with happy children or doing work that is meaningful to you.
Also, what is nourishing to your soul or to your spirit? Maybe volunteer service, having a career where you really feel fulfilled, where you really feel like you’re making the world a better place.
I invite you to really carve out time today to get your journal and write down the non-food ways in which you can feed yourself:
